What is Pixan?
What is Pixan?
Pixan is one of AMA’s main projects, a fair trade textile workshop in the western highlands of Guatemala. Pixan means “spirit” in the Mayan language K’iche and is an association of indigenous artisan weavers, experts in the ancient techniques of back-strap and pedal loom weaving and embroidery. Spirit is exactly what these women are full of, and gives them the purpose of leading fulfilling lives.
What is fair trade?
Fair trade is a social movement that offers an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership between producers and traders, businesses and consumers. Find out more about fair trade here.
Pixan operates according to fair trade principle in the most authentic and traditional sense of the term: it enables professional direct trade relationships to flourish between talented highland artisans and individuals and businesses around the world.
Why should you buy through Pixan?
The Pixan model champions fair pay and work conditions, high quality artisanal work, and direct trade relationships, which remove the need for middlemen and their fees.
How can I buy from Pixan?
Check out our online store Etsy and our Alternatives Boutique in both Xela and Virigina that sell a variety of the Pixan products amongst other fair trade products from AMA’s other programs.
